Miriam Munoz-McKinney

Social Worker

Supervisor / Coach

Overview

As a registered social worker with SWRB and ANZASW, I bring 17 years of dedicated practice within New Zealand, working across a wide range of communities and cultures. My roots trace back to Chile, but I have called New Zealand home for 47 years, embracing its diverse and vibrant communities. Throughout my career, I have navigated complex matters, advocating for individuals and families alongside agencies like the Police, Oranga Tamariki, and other external partners. My leadership and management roles within tau iwi and Māori organisations have shaped my approach, emphasising a holistic view of whānau life. Additionally, I have contributed to policy development, audit processes, caregiver assessments, and training programs, drawing on a strong foundation in both operational and strategic social work practices.

Supervision Approach

Supervision with me is a collaborative and reflective process, designed to empower you as a professional. I emphasise strengths-based and client-focused methodologies, ensuring that the unique needs of both you and your clients remain at the forefront. Together, we will set clear, actionable goals while exploring innovative approaches to challenges, encouraging you to think critically and creatively about your practice. My aim is to provide a space where you feel supported, yet challenged, to grow and reflect in ways that lead to meaningful and positive outcomes.

Skills and Experience

My experience spans family violence, advocacy, and foster care, alongside leadership roles where I have guided teams of social workers, students, and multidisciplinary professionals. Over seven years in management I have honed my ability to inspire, mentor, and support others in their professional journeys. Fluent in Spanish and with a basic level of Māori, I am equipped to engage meaningfully with diverse communities, embedding tikanga Māori principles into my practice to foster cultural safety and respect.
