What it feels like

You'll probably recognise some of these.

Burnout is easier to spot by how it feels than by any definition. People often notice things like:

  • The tank is empty, and a weekend off doesn't fill it back up.
  • Sunday evening arrives with a sense of dread.
  • You're going through the motions, doing the tasks but not really there.
  • You're shorter than you want to be with the people you care about.
  • You can't switch off, even when there's finally time to.

If a few of those land, you're not imagining it.

Why rest hasn't worked

If pushing through or taking a break had fixed it, it would be fixed by now.

A holiday helps for a few days, then the feeling comes back, because it doesn't change the patterns or the pressure underneath. Real recovery does two things at once: it rebuilds your energy, and it looks at what's draining you, so you can change what's in your control and set clearer limits. Done together, that's what makes recovery last. Most people start to feel the difference within weeks.

Who you're working with

Psychologists who understand the pressure, not only the symptoms.

You'll work one-to-one with a registered psychologist who knows burnout well. Real recovery, at your pace. Not an app, and not a few days off that fade the moment you're back at your desk.

Here's the difference: we also work with organisations on the causes of burnout, the workload, the culture, the way roles are designed. So we understand the pressure you're under, and we can help you recover and think clearly about what needs to change around you.

Frequently asked questions

Questions people ask us about burnout.

What are the signs of burnout?

The common signs of burnout are exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, feeling distant or cynical about work, and getting less done however hard you try. You might also notice broken sleep, a shorter temper, dread on a Sunday night, or quietly withdrawing from things. If a few of those sound familiar, it's worth getting support.

What's the difference between stress and burnout?

Stress comes and goes, and isn't always bad. Burnout is what happens when stress runs too long without recovery: exhaustion, feeling distant or cynical, and getting less done however hard you try. Stress eases when the pressure does. Burnout usually needs specific support, and it rarely lifts on its own.

Can you recover from burnout and stay recovered?

Yes, and most people do when recovery is supported properly. The key is doing both halves: rebuilding yourself, and changing some of what drained you. Rest alone often leads to recovering, then relapsing back into the same pressure.

How much does it cost, and could my insurance cover it?

Many private health insurance policies cover this kind of psychological support, so it's worth checking yours. If you're with UniMed, our partnership covers up to $1,000 a year, and we bill UniMed directly on your behalf.

What if the problem is my job? Should I leave?

That's your decision, and we won't push you either way. We help you think clearly, recover enough to see your options, and weigh the smaller changes before any big ones. You'll be making the call from a steadier place.

Do I need a diagnosis or referral to get help with burnout?

No. You can come to us directly, and you don't need a label to be worth helping.

Is burnout support in person or online?

Online, so you can get support from wherever suits you. It's flexible, and it fits around work and life.

Is burnout support confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between you and your psychologist, within the usual professional and legal limits.
